Marasmus is also called PEM ( protein energy malnutrition) because it is caused due to lack of both protein and carbohydrates. It is a common childhood health problem resulting in chronic diarrhoea and anaemia. It is caused basically by the lack of protein and carbohydrates supply to the children. It is seen most commonly in weaned infants of about one year of age. Weight of the victim declines severly and may become less than sixty of the standard weight. There is remarkable and rapid loss of muscle and tissues in the body.
