Marasmus And Its Symptoms And Preventive Measures

 Marasmus is also called PEM ( protein energy malnutrition) because it is caused due to lack of both protein and carbohydrates. It is a common childhood health problem resulting in chronic diarrhoea and anaemia. It is caused basically by the lack of protein and carbohydrates supply to the children. It is seen most commonly in weaned infants of about one year of age. Weight of the victim declines severly and may become less than sixty of the standard weight. There is remarkable and rapid loss of muscle and tissues in the body.

  • Thin arm.
  • Loose and dry skin.
  • Wrinkled face and body.
  • Shrunken body.
  • Wasted tissue.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Dehydration.
  • Thin limbs and swollen stomach.
  • Retardation in body growth.





Preventive Measures Of Marasmus




  • Increase in food intake.
  • Addition of carbohydrates ad fats in food items.
  • Encouragement on breast  feeding.
  • Give knowledge about nutritious and alanced diet in the family.
